SUMMARY:
To provide direct support to staff and students with disabilities, as well as students with challenging behaviors in order to manage behaviors that interfere with learning and therefore increase student progress and performance. The behavior specialist will be responsible for ensuring that staff has the knowledge and resources they need to work with the most intensive needs students including working directly with the highest need students in order to teach and model effective programming to staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist with setting up structured learning environments across the special education service continuum.
- Provides training and professional development as directed for all staff in the areas of disability awareness, evidence-based practices, and behavior supports.
- Assist with or conduct assessments like ADOS-2 and CARS and provide reports for the eligibility process such as observations.
- Adheres to state and federal guidelines under IDEA and Section 504.
- Attend IEP meetings, 504, and other school-based meetings as requested/needed.
- Assist teachers with data collection and review of student and teacher data.
- Assist with monitoring and development of IEPs for students with intensive needs who spend the majority of their school day in a self-contained setting.
- Attend workshops and conferences (including VDOE-sponsored) related to behavior, disabilities and intensive needs support.
- Provide support to students in all settings, but specifically self-contained settings.
- Works with school-based administrators, teachers and other staff to enhance programming for students with disabilities.
- Provide support in the development of needed materials, such as visual supports, for students who require more intensive support.
- Assist staff in supporting students in all educational settings who demonstrate interfering behaviors through the development of behavior support plans or providing behavior support recommendations to the student’s team,
- Supports the development of both individual, school, and district-wide SEL learning programs to meet the needs of students who are impaired in the areas of social skills and emotional regulation.
- Supports the development of comprehensive Positive Behavioral Intervention Support systems within county schools to reduce the need for punitive interventions such as suspension.
- Assists with functional Behavior Assessments/Behavior Intervention Plans.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION
Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university;
- Valid Virginia Teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education, further training in or certification in applied behavior analysis preferred.
- Experience working with individuals with challenging behaviors.
- Experience working in alternative programs and settings.
- Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.
- Applicant must have good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps. Evidence of fitness to teach from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned. Applicants who have had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching.

Lifting or moving children to wheelchair, table, desk, or assisting with bathroom/hygiene. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments under stressful conditions. After hours work may be required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
11 month contract.
EVALUATION
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
