Job Title:                  Athletic Coach - Volunteer Athletic Coach

Salary Scale:            Stipends available for select positions (vary per season and position)

Reports To:              Athletic Director, Principal, Executive Director of Human Resources

 

    

SUMMARY

 To carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the head coach and school administration. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamental strategy and physical training necessary to realize a degree of individual and team success.     Assignments and locations may vary daily based on the needs of the program, school(s) and division.  

Duties and Responsibilities

 A. Has a working knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the school board and is responsible for it’s implementation. 

B.  Has knowledge of the existing school district, state and league regulations.Implements same consistently.

C.  Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper  channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.

D.  Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program and school community.

E. To assist with the supervision of student/athletes before practice, during practice and after practice and/or games. 

Administrative Duties: 

a.     Assists the head coach in preparation for scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.

b.    Provides documentation to athletic director needed to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.

c.     Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. 

Student Related Responsibilities: 

  1. Provides training rules and other sports specific regulations to each candidate.
  2. Supervises practices, games and team trips.  Takes all necessary measures to safeguard each participant. This includes supervision in the locker rooms.
  3. Directs student managers and statisticians.
  4. Implements school conduct code.  Delineates due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.  Contacts parents when a student is alleged to have violated the athletic code.
  5. Accountable to the head coach for all equipment.  Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.  Arranges for issuing, marking, and storing of  equipment and submits an annual inventory and current records.  Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  6. Recommends budgetary items to the head coach for next year in his/her area of the program.
  7. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices and authorizes who may enter.
  8. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
  9. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
  10. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building, even if custodians are on duty.
  11. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. 

Program Responsibilities: 

  1. Assist the head coach in carrying out his responsibilities.
  2. Issues press releases and school announcements.
  3. Instructs team members concerning changes in rules.  Teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the head coach.
  4. Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
  5. Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach of that sport.
  6. Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach.
  7. Supervises players before and after practice.  Adequately prepare and help players.
  8. Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  9. Conducts discussion with other coaches in private.
  10. Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the head coach.
  11. Attends contests of other teams in the program when possible.
  12. Performs other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and/or that are required by the head coach.
  13. Assist in taking care of playing surface and area for your particular sport.

All head coaches and their staff are required to complete the coaches education test as provided by the VHSL.  All current coaches must complete the VHSL component which is III.  All coaches hired as of September 2010 must complete all three sections of the test.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Virginia Driver’s license.

Must meet all training requirements and certifications as established by the FCPS Athletic Department and VHSL. 

Valid Virginia Teaching License preferred;

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or general education degree (GED);

Experience working with children preferred.

Successful coaching experience in assigned sport is preferred;

Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
