Job Title:                Transportation Assistant

Salary Scale:          $13.00 Hourly/Non-Benefited Position

Reports To:            Supervisor of Transportation

Proposed Hours:    6 a.m.-10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Daily

 

Fluvanna County Public Schools seeks to hire a Transportation Assistant at our Operations Center.  The Transportation Assistant will primarily assist with parent inquiries and notifications of route and schedule changes.

SUMMARY

 

Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor, performs complex, specialized, repetitive, data collection duties related to one or more of the following: fleet, travel and statistical records. Assist in planning and scheduling student transportation routes as necessary. Assist with inquiries and communication as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Gather, assemble, tabulate, check, and file data.
  • Sort and input necessary data into the computer spreadsheets and reports as requested.
  • Review, verify, process, and distribute printed forms, lists, and documents. 
  • Assist in assigning and re-assigning of substitute drivers. 
  • Assign field trips and other extra trips in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Operate a two-way radio and respond to calls on telephone and two-way radio.
  • Answer routing questions for school staff and general public in a prompt and courteous manner.
  • Communicate both oral and written information to internal staff and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Work proactively with all staff and departments.
  • Operate a variety of office machines and equipment such as calculator, typewriter, copier, computers and related software. 
  • Ability to operate a school bus to transport students (preferred).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.  

QUALIFICATIONS 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrate ability to perform the required duties. A typical qualifying background would include a minimum of graduation from high school or equivalent, and experience in record keeping and creating spreadsheets.

Valid Virginia Driver’s license required. 

Virginia Commercial Driver License class A or B with passenger and school bus endorsements, preferred. 

 

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of record keeping, modern office methods and equipment, including data processing and Microsoft computer applications; basic math; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Clerical, oral and written communication skills. Telephone techniques and etiquette. Operation of business machines including a two-way radio. Basic topography, routing and scheduling.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or general education degree (GED);

 

Individuals must be highly qualified to be considered for this position.  There are three options to meet the designation of highly qualified (one of the three must be met):

  1. Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; OR
  2. Obtained an Associate's (or higher) degree; OR
  3. Met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing, readiness, and mathematics readiness). Example includes the ParaPro Assessment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.  The employee must be able to lift overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.  Lifting or moving children.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment under stressful conditions.  After hours work may be required.  May be exposed to physical outburst by students, including but not limited to, hitting, kicking, spitting, scratching, and biting. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT   $13.00 Hourly, Non-Benefited Position, Ending June 30, 2021

EVALUATION

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
