Job Title:       Head Athletic Coach - Swim (Boys and Girls)

 

Reports To:   The Athletic Director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal. 

 

Salary Scale:  Stipend - Part-time, non-benefited position.

 

Supervises:    A staff of the Fluvanna County High School assistant coaches and Fluvanna County Middle School coaches and athletes in conjunction with the athletic director and the respective principal.  

 

Job Goal:           To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.  At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence. 

 

General:   

A.   The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community’s image of the entire system.  The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not over-ride the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.

B.    The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments.

C.    It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function as a head coach.  In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

 A.     Organizational and Communication

1.     send information/correspondence to players/parents

2.     conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes and coaches

3.     assume responsibility for schedule development or schedule validation

4.     develop procedures for open communication with parents and athletes

5.     establish dialogue with parents and players to address issues or concerns.

 B.    Administrative

1.     team budget preparation

2.     Complete a pre-season roster after cuts have been made and a number roster one week before season begins.

3.     equipment inventory/ordering/management (Must be turned in to AD)

4.     repair and cleaning of equipment and uniforms

5.     implement school athletic code

6.     ensure completion of health exam by all athletes

7.     ensure existence of medical insurance for athletes

8.     ensure athletic participation fee payment by athletes

9.     collect cautionary statements

10. distribute team rosters, contest schedules and descriptions of contest locations to all players and parents.

11. monitor athlete attendance/behavior/academic status

12. check grades at quarter/semester

13. determine and procure team awards

14. administer season-ending program evaluation by athletes and parents.

15. complete required state association rules exam, or attend rules clinic.

16. complete required administrative reports by designated date(s)

17. monitor student/athletes before practice/games during practice/games and after practice/games.  One coach must stay until all players and managers are off of school grounds.

18. ensure the safety of all student athletes as the team travels to away sporting events and home from sporting events.

19. keep Athletic Director informed of all team rules, procedures and happenings involving athletes and parents.

20. evaluate all assistant coaches at season end.

21. provide coaches, players and parents with rules and expectations of each.

22. Work to maintain practice and playing facilities.

23. Be evaluated by Athletic Director at seasons end.

24. To make sure all doors are secured at all times of practice.  (ex:  gym doors, football field gates etc.)

25. If you need to have a meeting during club time, you must arrange it with the proper administrator at least a week in advance.  Remember clubs meet different days.  All students must have a pre-written pass from you or a roster must be given to all teachers at least a week before the meeting is to occur.  You cannot do an “all call” during school hours.

26.  Assist in helping to set up and take down for team athletic events.

27.  You must meet with all parents of players prior to the season starting.  This is a requirement you will be held to as part of your evaluation.  Athletic Director must receive proof in writing. 

 C.    Training and Preparation

1.     appropriate development of positive sportsmanship

2.     sequential conditioning

3.     appropriate skill training

4.     appropriate tactical training

5.     appropriate positive motivation

6.     appropriate attention to maturity, readiness and pairing of athletes.

7.     Follow Out of Season Practice Rules as set down by the VHSL and Region II.

D.    Sports Medicine (in conjunction with Athletic Trainer)

1.     Ability to use approved first-aid and CPR skills.

2.     Interact with team physicians, family physicians, parent(s) and athletic trainers following injury to an athlete

3.     Ensure athlete is cleared by M.D. in order to return to practice.

4.     Develop and implement a site-specific emergency response plan.

5.     Knowledge of AED system. 

E.    Secure valuables during practice and games

1.  Communicate this rule to all athletes.

2.  If a theft occurs, submit a statement of investigation findings to the Athletic Director and School Resource Officer.                                   

F.    Assist in maintaining a playing and practice area for your particular sport including but not limited to:

1.    Painting fields

2.    Cleaning fields

3.    Sweeping floors

4.     Setting up bleachers and chairs

5.    Anything else necessary to establish a safe playing area for the appropriate athletic team

G.   All Head Coaches are required to make sure the following occurs before the Athlete is eligible to participate in their season.

1.     Parent and student has attended mandatory parent meeting.  Signed off on student/athlete handbook.  (Form must be turned into athletic office).

2.     Physical form has been turned in. All four pages completed.

3.     Activity fee has been paid.

4.     Concussion acknowledgment sheet has been read and signed.

H.    Head Coaches are also required to make sure their web-site is up-dated regularly and all proper materials are current.

I.      All head coaches and their staff are required to complete all three sections of the coaches certification program provided by the Virginia High School League (VHSL).

J.      Head Coaches will not begin any out of season conditioning until after the first game of the season before their season begins.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Virginia Teaching License preferred;

GED or high school diploma;

Valid Virginia Driver's License;

Successful coaching experience in assigned sport is preferred;

Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
