Job Title:                 Teacher - Health and Medical Sciences

Reports to:              The Building Principal

Location:                 Fluvanna County High School

Salary:                    Commensurate with Experience

Contract Length:    10 month position

 

Summary:

The courses offered may include:  Nurse Aide I, Medical Terminology/Nutrition, Introduction to Health Occupations. 

Duties and responsibilities of a Health and Medical Sciences Teacher include but are not limited to the following:

  • Under general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator, plans and implements instructional programs designed primarily to prepare and train youth for gainful employment or entrepreneurship in health and medical science careers following high school or college; to perform ancillary functions in support of these instructional programs in health and medical sciences.
  • Provides health and medical sciences instruction that is realistic in terms of current and future job specifications. Utilizes a variety of teaching methods which will promote the attainment of desirable goals by each student. Participates in the development of instructional materials.
  • Cooperates with local career counseling and guidance personnel. Assists all health and medical science students to make informed decisions regarding personal occupational goals in health and medical sciences. Provides related instruction with field, laboratory, cooperative work, or other occupational experience that is appropriate to the career objectives of the student.
  •  Assists all health and medical science students to plan, develop, and conduct health and medical science experience activities appropriate to their occupational goals. Supervises the health and medical science activities of all students through on-site visitation wherever the activities occur by observation and conference with students, employers, and parents.
  • Evaluates students’ progress toward achieving their occupational goals and reports to parents and district administration.
  •  Meets all state requirements for CTE programs.
  •  Prepares students to successfully complete state licensure exams and/or industry credentialing test as applicable.

Collaborates with community members to enrich opportunities and resources available to students.

 

Education/Experience

 

Must hold a Collegiate Professional, Postgraduate Professional, or Technical Professional license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an endorsement in Nursing Aide or Practical Nursing.  A master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in health care preferred.  

 

Must hold an active RN license in the state of Virginia. 

The Virginia Board of Nursing also requires that Nurse Aide instructors:

1.       Be a registered nurse who holds a valid, unrestricted license in Virginia or a multistate licensure privilege.

2.       Have two years of experience as a registered nurse within the previous 5 years and at least one year of experience in provision of long-term care facility services.  Such experience may include, but not be limited to, employment in a nurse aide education program or employment in or supervision of nursing students in a nursing facility or unit, geriatrics department, chronic care hospital, home care or other long-term care setting.  Experience should include varied responsibilities, such as direct client care, supervision and education.

  • Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.

  • Applicant must have good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps. Evidence of fitness to teach from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician.

  • Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university (preferred);certification in area of teaching field 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Demonstrates command of Standard English, both spoken and written

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals.  Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.

The employee must be able to lift overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally. Lifting or moving children to wheelchair, table, desk, or bathroom.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment under stressful conditions.  After hour work may be required. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

10 month contract.  

EVALUATION  Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of  personnel.
