Job Title:              Agriculture Teacher (Middle School)

SUMMARY

Teaches one or more subjects to students in middle and/or secondary schools by performing the following duties.  The proposed courses within the program may include:  Introduction to Agriscience and Agriscience Exploration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Under general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator, plans and implements instructional programs designed primarily to prepare and train youth for gainful employment or entrepreneurship in agricultural careers following high school or college; to perform ancillary functions in support of these instructional programs in agriculture.

  • Provides agricultural instruction that is realistic in terms of current and future job specifications. Utilizes a variety of teaching methods which will promote the attainment of desirable goals by each student. Participates in the development of instructional materials.

  • Cooperates with school counselors. Assists all agricultural education students to make informed decisions regarding personal occupational goals in agriculture. Provides related instruction with field, shop, laboratory, cooperative work, or other occupational experience that is appropriate to the career objectives of the student.

  • Assists all agricultural education students to plan, develop, and conduct agricultural experience activities appropriate to their occupational goals. Supervises the agricultural experience activities of all agricultural education students through on-site visitation wherever the activities occur by observation and conference with students, employers, and parents.

  • Evaluates students’ progress toward achieving their occupational goals and reports to parents and district administration.

  • Meet all state requirements for CTE programs.

  • Collaborate with community members to enrich opportunities and resources available to students.

  • Instructs students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.

  • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school.

  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.

  • Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress.

  • Keeps attendance records.

  • Maintains discipline in classroom.

  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.

  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

  • Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling student in adjustment and academic problems.

  • Complies with school and school board policies and regulations.

  • Demonstrates professional growth.

  • Prompt and accurate with required records and reports.

  • Uses instructional and planning time effectively.

  • Assumes responsibility for care of materials, equipment, and facilities.

  • Assumes responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to his/her care.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the subject being taught.

  • Uses out-of-class assignments, when appropriate, to support the instructional objectives.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must hold a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an endorsement in Agriculture Education.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.

  • Applicant must have good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps. Evidence of fitness to teach from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician.

  • Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university;certification in area of teaching field.

Must hold a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an endorsement in Agriculture Education.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Demonstrates command of Standard English, both spoken and written

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals.  Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned. Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching.

The employee must be able to lift overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment under stressful conditions.  After hour work may be required.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

10 month contract

EVALUATION  Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of  personnel.
