Description

Job Title:                  Speech Language Pathologist

Reports to:              Director of Special Education 

Salary:                    Commensurate with Experience

 

Duties and responsibilities of a Speech/Language Pathologist include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for hearing screenings on all new students within sixty (60) administrative days of the student’s enrollment.
  • The hearing of all children in grades 3, 7 and 10 shall be screened during the school year.
  • Responsible for speech, language, and voice screenings on all children through grade 3 within 60 days of initial enrollment
  • Conducts assessments on all children suspected of having speech/hearing/language delays or disabilities
  • Serves as a consultant to the Child Study Team
  • Serves as a member of the eligibility committee as needed
  • Develops an IEP for all students on their caseloads
  • Develop IEP goals and/or objectives
  • Implements the IEP and provides direct and/or consultative services
  • Provides progress reports as required
  • Ensures that each student on his/her caseload has a current, valid and appropriate IEP
  • Acts as a consultant to regular classroom teachers
  • Provides counseling and guidance of parent, children, and teachers regarding speech and language impairments
  • Report writing
  • Maintain progress notes
  • Log services and bill Medicaid for therapy sessions and/or evaluations
  • Travel among schools to deliver therapy services
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must hold a current, valid school speech-language pathologist license issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Valid Virginia Driver's license. 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC).

  • Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY).
  • Experience working with individuals with challenging behaviors preferred.

  • Experience working in alternative programs and settings preferred.

  • Valid certification and degree to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.

  • Applicant must have good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps. Evidence of fitness to teach from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.  Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.  The employee must be able to lift overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.  Lifting or moving children to wheelchair, table, desk, or assisting with bathroom/hygiene.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment under stressful conditions. After hour work may be required.  

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

10 month contract.  Terms may vary based on the needs of the school and division. 

 

EVALUATION

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of  personnel.
