SUMMARY

Teaches elementary students academic, social, and motor skills by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines of state and school.

  • Provides direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills.
  • Supports the implementation of a comprehensive literacy program through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction. 
  • Provide direct instruction in the areas of reading and writing for identified groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers.

  • Assess children throughout the school and identify children at risk.

  • Design and implement reading academic interventions using research-based methodology. 

  • Document interventions and progress on each child.

  • Communicate with school personnel and parents of children regarding reading levels and rate of progress. 

  • Gather, compile, and disaggregate data; and link that data to student learning and instruction. 

  • Differentiate instruction based on assessment data.

  • Participate in collaborative instructional planning and assist classroom teachers with the identification of resources and instructional strategies to support literacy.

  • Assess students using a variety of measures to determine appropriate placement and specific instructional needs, and provide ongoing training and follow-up in the use of assessments to plan instruction.

  • Provide support and training for all teachers and continuous staff development that supports school & division literacy initiatives through modeling and coaching instructional methods.

  • Serve as a liaison between the school and the K-12 Literacy Committee. 

  • Facilitate the circulation of reading and writing instructional materials and resources to classroom teachers. 

  • Assist with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions involving the literacy/Title I program.  

  • Participate in parent conferences and provide instructional suggestions. 

  • Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to class.

  • Prepares, administers, and corrects tests, and records results.

  • Assigns lessons, corrects papers, and hears oral presentations.

  • Serve as a liaison between the school and the K-12 Literacy Committee

  • Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.

  • Discusses pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.

  • Keeps attendance and grade records as required by school.

  • Works cooperatively with the total staff.

  • Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.

  • Assumes responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to their care.

  • Practice and promote positive interaction with and among students.

  • Encourages self-direction and self-motivation in students.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the subject being taught.

  • Utilizes a variety of appropriate materials and resources.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching license with a Reading Specialist endorsement.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Elementary teaching experience required.
  • Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent.
  • Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.

  • Applicant must have good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps. Evidence of fitness to teach from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician.

  • Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.

The employee must be able to lift overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally. Lifting or moving children to wheelchair, table, desk, or bathroom.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment under stressful conditions.  After hour work may be required. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

10 month contract.   

EVALUATION

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
