Job Title:              K-12 Literacy Coordinator 

Building:              School Board Office

Reports to:           Executive Director for Instruction and Finance

Contract:              12 Month Position

Salary:                 Commensurate with Experience 


Summary:

The K-12 literacy coordinator is responsible for supporting continuous professional growth for teachers by providing and/or organizing demonstration lessons and workshops; monitoring the use of screenings and assessments in planning for literacy instruction for students at all achievement levels; consulting with teachers on appropriate, research-based instructional strategies and materials to be used in literacy; collecting and analyzing data to identify and plan for individual student and school- and division-level needs; consulting with building principals and other administrators on literacy instruction; and assisting in the organization of and participation in curriculum development teams.

 

 The K-12 Literacy Coordinator will possess an/a:

 

  • Ability to foster and maintain a sense of trust and rapport with peers.
  • Ability to coach others in improving literacy instruction.
  • Ability to promote collaborative relationships and a problem-solving model.
  • Ability to support the goal of all students performing at or above grade level and meeting or exceeding Virginia’s standards in literacy.
  • Ability to manage time effectively while working with all schools in the division.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  
  • High level of knowledge regarding research-based instructional practices in literacy.

The K-12 literacy coordinator will hold valid professional licensure (master’s degree and reading endorsement preferred) and have previous classroom and leadership experience.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent. 

Holds the Post Graduate Professional Certificate. 

Have demonstrated the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with administrators and teachers. 

Have a minimum of five years of successful experience as a teacher, supervisor or administrator.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common educational journals, reports and  documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, teachers, and the community.  Ability to write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to staff, community, and the school board. 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

 

REASONING ABILITY  Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 12 month contract 

 

EVALUATION  Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
